The appearance is white fine crystals, some with light gray or light yellow. The relative molecular mass is 84.99 and the specific gravity is 2.257. Easy to deliquesh, easily soluble in water and liquid ammonia. Slightly soluble in ethanol and glycerin, melting point of 306 °C, decomposition temperature 380 °C, decomposition products for sodium nitrite and oxygen, heating to a higher temperature when the decomposition intensified, the production of oxygen, nitrogen, nitrogen oxide compound mixture gas. It has strong oxidation and can cause combustion explosion when mixed with organic matter, sulfur, sulfites, etc.

This product is an important chemical raw material, widely used in glass, dyes, explosives, metallurgy, machinery, enamel and other industries.

1. This product should be stored in a ventilated and dry place. Protected from rain, heat and sunlight.

2. This product should be avoided and co-stored with acids, metal powders, wood chips, gauze, paper, sugar, sulfur and other organic flammables and reducibles.

3. When this product is handled and palletized, it should be gently held and placed to prevent friction and impact.

4. The fire caused by sodium nitrate can be extinguished with a large amount of water.

Solubility: 1g soluble in 1.1ml water, 0.6ml boiling water, 125ml ethanol, 52ml boiling ethanol, 3470ml absolute ethanol, 300ml anhydrous methanol, also soluble in liquid ammonia and glycerin.

Chemical properties

It absorbs heat when dissolved in water. Heating to above 380 °C that is, decomposition into sodium nitrite and oxygen, 400 to 600 °C when releasing nitrogen and oxygen, 700 °C release nitric oxide, 775 ~ 865 °C when there is a small amount of nitrogen dioxide and nitrous oxide generation. Coheating with sulfuric acid produces nitric acid and sodium bisulfate. It can play a complex decomposition role with salts. It is an oxidizing agent. Contact with wood chips, cloth, oil and other organic matter can cause combustion and explosion.
